In this audio, a Black mother shares with her daughter how her stress has accumulated over the years. She tells how the racial protests of the moment reminded her of the social and racial unrest she lived through in her past. She recalls how attending a predominantly white college was a great source of stress and isolation because she didn’t feel she could speak out on anything. In this moment, she doesn’t feel as alone and has been able to speak out more with her family by her side. Yet, the years of stress still caught up with her body when she had a cardiomyopathy, making her realize just how much she had internalized throughout her life.
This time I don’t feel as isolated for a number of reasons and one of them is you because you’re now an adult and it’s wonderful having you here because we have a chance to chat and become outraged and laugh about our joy… made me realize how much I’ve been missing you and other Black people.
