I Have to Remain Hopeful… Well I’m Not

In this clip, an interracial couple share their differing optimistic and pessimistic perspectives for change in the future. While the wife comments that she has to remain hopeful, the husband says he is not and cites the consistent maintenance and perpetuation of racism in this country as the reason he remains un-hopeful. He observes that throughout history, white violence (fueled by fear of losing power) always impedes any sort of efforts to make change. This consistent cycle is what makes him lack any hope.

Every time this country finds itself in this sort of awakening moment, you get pushback from White folks who are in power because they believe that somehow that change, if we have a more equitable society, I’m going to lose power.
