I Like Being Different, I Always Am Who I Am

Listen as this insightful young student describes how she approaches her cultural identity and the way it impacts (or doesn’t) how people might see her. She starts the discussion by identifying that she is different, and difference is something she embraces. She then asks her conversation partner what it’s like when people think she’s white. When she gets is the same question in return, she recognizes that in her current experience her identity doesn’t change but that awareness might change as she gets older

I always am who I am, but… maybe when I get older I’ll realize it.
