Both encounters occurred at very young, formative ages – 10 and 6 years old respectively – and had lasting impacts. One conversation partner recalls a conversation with her mother after having sat at a segregated diner counter and interacting with a racist waitress.
Sometimes people don’t like you simply because the color of your skin, and you notice that her skin color was different from yours… well, in her world, you aren’t welcome the way you are in the world that we live in.
These “teachable moments” as they’re fondly referred to in this clip were the very beginnings of their racial education as Black people growing up in the U.S. Yet, as adults they now view “teachable moments” in the reverse, as an opportunity to call out racism and educate racist individuals on their behavior.
