In this clip, Dr. Joseph asks Dr. Duran to describe how they direct their anger and energy to create change toward systems. Dr. Duran shares that they recognize how incremental and slow change can be because hegemony is deeply embedded and perpetuated. They direct their efforts toward systems and recognize how widespread their damage is and try to parse out the difference between individual and systemic damage.
I believe that the biggest impact we can have, is on the structures. That’s what public health is about: trying to change social determinants, institutionalized racism and sexism and all of those other things that are so obvious right now.
