In this clip, two Black women share how they have experienced how class stratifies the Black community and creates judgmental rifts. One woman describes her experiences in school where her peers would bully one another depending on their income level. Being lower income made her subject to bullying from her own Black community. She also noticed that this persisted even when she became an adult and didn’t have same connections as her Black peers who attended college as legacies and were part of Black fraternities and sororities. In response, the other woman agrees that sometimes external valuations are internalized and released on each other as a way that further perpetuates division.
I don’t have an education. I don’t have a name drop, so I couldn’t hang with them even if I wanted to. Maybe they would have pity on me…
