Dismantling the Prison System

In this clip, two Black women discuss the prison system’s disproportionate incarceration of Black and people of color and how the prison pipeline targets poor communities of color. They describe how the prison system is an evolution of Jim Crow because of the way it strips humans of their rights and freedoms and then continues to make them treated less than human even once they’ve served their time. Essentially, it creates a cycle in which those who were in prison end up there again because they don’t have the means or resources to survive other than resorting to the crimes that got them there in the first place.

That label is on you forever. You’re a prisoner forever. You’re a criminal forever.
