In this clip, two Black women discuss how the white savior trope and how white narratives always find their way into Black stories or films. They describe how in the movie Queen and Slim the white savior trope played out and how the most recent Harriet Tubman movie didn’t get a lot of press or marketing, which they suspect is because movies with Black female leads aren’t as popular to mainstream media. They end this clip with an intriguing question about what it looks like to support the film industry despite harmful tropes being perpetuated.
Is there a way where you feel like you could balance that in a way where it’s like ‘oh I wish they didn’t have this character but overall it was great’?
