In this clip, a Black couple described how intentional they are in supporting Black businesses and how they have observed the effects of gentrification. They share how gentrification occurred in Chicago and turned a predominantly low income, Black neighborhood where the police wouldn’t even go into a community where townhomes were selling for six figures. He observes the same gentrification occurring in Seattle. He made attempts to buy up auction properties and vacant lots in Seattle during 2008 but couldn’t find any banks that were giving away loans or people to invest with him. Ultimately, they observe that sometimes by the time you try to save the community, it’s too late.
You can live anywhere but that’s not necessarily where home is. We want our home to be home.
