Subtle vs. Overt Racism

In this audio, a Black man describes the differences between experiencing the overt racism growing up in Chicago versus the subtle racism that occurred in Seattle. Coming to Seattle, he had heard that there was no racism, and it was a more progressive city in that sense. He shares harrowing stories of how racism manifested in Chicago where he grew up and how those experiences shaped how he thought racism could manifest elsewhere. When such overt racism didn’t occur in Seattle, he instead had to face the subtle systemic racism of corporate America.
