Belonging

In this clip, a Black Seattleite shares what it was like growing up in the city and going to different schools throughout the city. Born and raised in the Central District, she describes how she went to her family’s alma maters and went to school in diverse spaces until she got to 3rd grade where she was bussed out to a new school. In the new school she was one of two Black students in her class and for the first time in her life didn’t feel a sense of belonging. In the Central District, she felt she was home and had a community where she belonged

I can’t even describe the level of discomfort but I just knew I didn’t belong there.
