Unlearning

Listen as a white father describes how a school’s problematic approach to teaching history led him and his wife to decide to homeschool their student until they found a better school. He recalls how the school celebrated Thanksgiving in a way that perpetuated erasures and promoted Thanksgiving as a simple celebration between pilgrims and Native Americans. The lack of honest discussion and misrepresentation of history led them to pull their oldest child from school and homeschool them to “re-educate” them and help them unlearn what had been taught.

I can only imagine how my daughter felt on a day-to-day basis… We’d take a year, reset her on history, culture, her culture, her identity…
