Of Her Own Volition

Listen as two friends discuss the significance of the white friend taking the time to read and educate herself without placing the burden of education on her Black friend. The pandemic and protests for racial justice have offered the white friend an opportunity to accumulate knowledge and engage in conversations that help to correct her behaviors and become a better ally. She describes those conversations as tense yet rewarding because she recognizes they are necessary for her social growth and relationship with her Black friend. Her Black friend recognizes the work that her white friend has been putting in and says that she has been incredibly assertive in her pursuit of education which has in turn strengthened their relationship.

I would feel like a crappy person if I couldn’t have those conversations with you. I feel like that would be very dismissive of your entire being.
