We’re Not Experts, We’re Just Doing Our Best

In this clip, a white student describes how faculty in her department place the responsibility of education and representation on her. She recalls how she emailed the department head asking them to respond to the George Floyd protests and take this moment to address the department and community. The faculty in her department instead placed the responsibility on her and a few of her peers. Since then, she has been working with the students to have conversations and engage in discussions. Even more frustrating is the absence of faculty in the discussions hosted by the students and deferment of responsibility onto the already overworked graduate students who are advocating for change in a space.

We’ll be in these meetings with the faculty and they’ll be like, ‘here are these things YOU should do,’ to the two underpaid graduate students
