“How Do You Shift That?” Activism In Black Media Studies

This dialogue features media historian Dr. Jane Rhodes, who tends to “think back as well as forward,” and media sociologist Dr. Herman Gray, who asks a guiding question of Black media studies, “What does Black add to [the] formulation [of Black media studies]?”

“This is the activist question: how do you shift that? How do you get people to have a much more critical understanding that is not going to create transformation overnight, but can chip away, perhaps, at the most egregious parts of this.”
