Gatekeeping Antiracism Is Not the Deeper Work

In this clip, two professors who are women of color discuss how social justice work can get weaponized or used in a reductionist way. They talk about how “memorizing the binary list of what is white supremacy and what isn’t” is in fact upholding white supremacy practices.

Many of our white colleagues, some nonwhite, started using anti-racism and Black lives Matter, kind of weaponizing it as a way of controlling other people… to elevate and esteem themselves as anti racist and then to be the gatekeeper for others who somehow are not.
