In this clip, two Black students discuss representation in Disney channel movies and the impact of their portrayal of characters of color. One student begins by describing the High School Musical movie where the Black characters seem to break out from stereotypes but are still confined to being jocks. In response, the other student observes that Disney channel movies of the early and mid 2000s aren’t actually diverse in their characters because they often only have one character of color and they lean into stereotypes with them.
Because High School Musical they talked about ‘oh we’re all in this together’ and ‘unity’ but the only Black people the only one that went out of the box was Taylor Mckessie
