A Word That Has Been Used Against Us, We Start to Use Against Each Other

Listen as a grandmother and her grandson discuss the n-word and how sometimes it is used by Black people to separate and degrade even within the Black community. The grandson brings up the Chris Rock special in which the n-word is used to identify Black people who ‘can’t get their act together.’ The grandmother observes that this change in language turning inward to the community is harmful because it takes the damaging meaning applies it the community. At the same time, she is cognizant of the generational differences at play and how the word has, over time, taken on different uses and meanings.

It separates in a whole other way.
