I Really See No Need to Distance Yourself From Each Other

In this clip, a Black student describes how the Black American and Black immigrant communities are fighting the same battles in the U.S. She points out that when a racist cop pulls an African American over, they aren’t concerned with whether they are Kenyan or Nigerian or Ethiopian; they are only going to see skin color and discriminate as accordingly. Yet, this student has observed and experienced a lot of division between African and Black communities. She describes an experience in which a Black woman was visibly annoyed with her presence. She later overheard that woman on the phone calling her Somali and telling the person she was talking to that the Somalis are taking up all the recourses. In her shock, the student didn’t correct the woman, but the experience exemplifies the division within the communities.

There’s a lot of people who try to divide that and I just don’t see the reason why because they are going through the same struggles
