Listen as a Black man shares his theories regarding why white people remain unpersuaded about privilege and how it exists/manifests for them. He theorizes that coming to terms with privilege might bring on feelings of shame or helplessness because there is no way to go back in time, reset history, and see how things play out when the playing field is level. Realizing privilege doesn’t come just through one conversation or in a single all-encompassing moment. It can only be achieved through continued conversation and repetition.
If you’re faced with the fact that whatever your station in life is was gotten because your deck was stacked, your dice were weighted, you started on second base… I think there is an embarrassment and a dissonance and a pain that can only be satiated by rejecting of the principle out of hand.
