Race and Gender in the Greek System

Listen to two Black students in the Greek system describe their experiences and how they handle interrupting privilege and racism when they encounter it. The differences between how men and women in the Greek system talk about race is notable for these students. They discuss how Black women in the Greek system are commodified, specifically referencing one Black woman they know and how they have witnessed her experiences. When it comes to addressing the racism they encounter, they observe that minority members tend to speak up more often only to find themselves silenced or diminished.

I’ll always stand up and speak my mind and people will be like, “Woah woah woah. No no no no. Let’s kind put this under the rug.” And I’ll be like, “no, that’s no okay.” And it’s always one of those weird things where you have to balance it out because you don’t want to be too much but you also need to make sure you’re enough.
