Language and Power

In this clip, two dialogue partners discuss the impact language has on perpetuating racism and what it looks like to interrupt language with language. They specifically talk about the n-word when one of the partners recalls an incident where a white person used the word because they had been given permission to by their other Black friends. They reflect on ways to address when people use the n word, especially non-Black people and the impact it has on interactions. Ultimately, they recognize that the multiplicity of meaning and range of responses to language creates a disjointed approach to action and interrupting privilege. Unity and consistency are necessary to combatting racist language.

We need to be a little more specific about exactly what we need to interrupt. And I feel like, if we all just united, it would all be easier because we’re on the same front.
