Coping and Sharing Space

In this clip, listen as a Black friend describes how white roommate has become main support because they can be in person. Dealing with the isolation and distance from family made the pandemic incredibly difficult for her, especially because she connects and copes best in person. Although she is able to facetime with family irregularly and has joined on some zoom happy hours occasionally, there isn’t the same kind of connectivity or intimate conversation she normally relies on to cope and process information and relationships. Her white roommate has been instrumental in offering those conversations because they share space and can provide that person-to-person interaction.

I cope through talking with other people and talking through other people and processing things with other people. I just have that better when I’m person-to-person rather than screen-to-screen.
