In this short but gripping clip, a Black woman graduate student describes the labor she has experienced and been expected to expend in the academy, especially during the pandemic. While she reflects that her department has been very supportive and given her a space to honestly describe/advocate for her experiences as a Black woman in the academy, she recognizes the reality that there are still much larger changes to be made. The labor seems to steadily increase as well as the demand for it, a burden placed on Black women. Especially in the height of the pandemic and #BlackLivesMatter protests, Black women labor is pulled in a myriad of directions.
The extra work especially Black women put in in this moment it’s almost like, ‘oh you guys are here, you guys are doing this great work. Now here are all these opportunities to further expend your labor and your time and do the work for free.’
