Listen as these two students commiserate over different experiences navigating the “Angry Black Woman” stereotype. The idea of the “Angry Black Woman” dictates how many Black women respond to situations of injustice; their righteous anger is tempered or filtered because they don’t want to fall into the stereotype. One student shares everything that runs through her mind before she allows herself to get upset. Her anger is diluted.
When you try to tell someone ‘what you just said is racist,’ they fly off the wall… because they think I’m talking about their character. I’m talking about the comment that you just said that was racist.
Interestingly enough, this conversation is filled with laughter. Even in their frustration, these students can find the humor out of how ridiculously people respond to situations.
