Activism Through the Ages

Listen to this academic and activist as she recounts her experiences attending protests and movements. She describes her role as the “protector,” vigilantly watching out for fellow protestors and her students by documenting the events with her camera and being at the ready to call lawyers should anyone be arrested. Her lifetime of experience in activism grants her a perspective on current movements to offer impactful advice to youth activists.

I think they see it more as a movement or a cause rather than something that is deep within you, that is a long-term commitment

She cautions against rushing the process of social change. In the age of social media, we are all very used to news spreading rapidly and immediately. This academic encourages activists to recognize that social movements are not built for such immediacy; rather, she encourages us to exercise patience and extend a the timeframe for change.
