Look for Words That Build People

In this clip, a grandmother and her grandson discuss how language can be changed to nurture, uplift, and encourage people to be themselves rather than demean and confine people to labels. The grandmother mentions that labels and constricted language don’t let people simply be human. Definitions and external valuations can sometimes be restricting and harmful to the way we communicate and interact with one another, so it is important to always be aware of the power of words and ensure that they are used to uplift one another. In agreement, her grandson adds that labels can prevent people from understanding and simply jump to assumptions or prejudice.

In order to feel like they understand someone they don’t wanna actually get to understand them they just wanna slap a label on them and say ‘you look like this, you act like this, so you’re this’
