In this clip, two Black women discuss the intersections and diversions of class and race. One of the women describes how, as a transracial adoptee, all she saw were children of color with white parents. It impacted her worldview into thinking that white people were the ones with money and took care of her while Black people and people of color don’t and can’t. She recognizes there is a lack of representation of people of color who are middle class and thriving, and she finds herself downplaying her accomplishments because she thinks they’re rare. It is a complex conversation about class and race and how non-monolithic Black experiences are.
What would a mediocre white man say right now? They would be so emboldened and powerfully talking about the smallest accomplishments. And here I am downplaying some of my proudest accomplishments?
