Who Are You

In this clip, an African woman shares her experience with getting a job post 9/11 and having two resumes – one with her African name and one with her second name, an English name. The resumes were identical in every way except for the difference in first name. Recruiters encouraged her to submit Janet’s resume more often than the resume with her African name. Ultimately it was the Janet resume that got the job offer. Yet, when she started working at the company she made sure to have her co-workers call her by her African name.

Janet went to her boss and said, ‘you know, you need to start calling me by my [African name] because the Janet thing is just to cut through the rubbish. But my name is [African] and I’m proud of it’
