While the wife comments that she has to remain hopeful, the husband says he is not and cites the consistent maintenance and perpetuation of racism in this country as the reason he remains un-hopeful. He observes that throughout history, white violence (fueled by fear of losing power) always impedes any sort of efforts to make change.
