Being Black in the Greek System

In this clip, two Black students describe their journeys in the Greek system as the only Black students in their houses and the work they’ve done with their houses to have conversations to make allies out of their brothers. When they first rushed, they found that they were the only ones that addressed racism in the houses. One student remembers a conversation he had with a Black alumnus who told him about the work he had done to ensure that there was even less racism today than there was when he first rushed. Slowly, both students have educated their friends who now speak out against racism and create a collective front against anyone who does engage in racist behaviors. Their white peers use their white privilege to combat racism and make space for their Black peers.

When I first got here, every time there was an instance of race, I’d have to stand up for myself. But now it’s good to know that sometimes when there’s instances of race, some of the guys in my house will stand up for me.
