Creating Sanctuaries for Ourselves

In this clip, two Black women graduate students discuss how they prioritize self and community by finding and creating sanctuaries. One student describes how she has created a sanctuary for herself by spending time with her family. She defines sanctuary as a safe space to exist with our bodies and minds. During the pandemic especially she prioritizes being available to “drop everything” just to hang out with her sister and niece.

I’ve just been 100% willing to drop what I need to do that day or that afternoon and put it on another time. Even if it’s using my energy working a longer day another day. These are the people who are important to me and a 2-year-old running around is just pure joy and life and energy.
