That’s What People of Color Do Every Day

In this clip, a Black grad student recounts how he interrupted a moment of privilege at a conference. At a session about the hidden histories of people of color, the Asian facilitator shared a story about how he called out Native appropriation at a lodge. Then, when he shared a letter from a white man that also called out the appropriation, all the white people in the room applauded. The grad student shares how he interrupted the white gaze in that moment.

I was sitting next to a Black woman and I was almost shaking, I was so frustrated. And she was like, “Go ahead, say it.” She told me to stand up, and I called everyone out like, “Why are you clapping? You didn’t clap for the facilitator.”
