Checkmate: Building Confidence, Building Community

Listen to Det. Cookie and Victoria discuss their community outreach and involvement in youth education to fight racial discrimination. Det. Cookie reflects on how other people’s perceptions and assumptions impact the way we see ourselves and often inhibit us from realizing our full potential. So often, our limitations exist within our own minds and our insecurities stem from arbitrary social standards. For BIPOC populations especially, Victoria reflects that these standards make it harder for external resources to invest in communities, so they have to invest in themselves. Both Det. Cookie and Victoria recognize the power of encouraging young students, uplifting them against narratives that seek to tear them down or relegate them to second tier. Their work reflects how having confidence builds community.

Never underestimate yourself and your abilities. Don’t let other people’s view of what you should be or what you should achieve affect what you can do
